Everything You Need to Know
When you have done mastectomy, your doctor may suggest a breast reconstruction to rebuild your breast. You can have breast reconstruction months or years after having a mastectomy. Going through a mastectomy is not an easy thing, you have to deal with the aftermath. Fortunately, you can gain your self-confidence back by going for breast reconstruction.
What is it?
Post-mastectomy breast reconstruction is a surgery used to give breasts a new shape in place of the one that has been removed. A breast mound is used to have the shape and look of your breast. The goal is to create a breast that looks like the opposite breast.
It can be done in two ways: flap reconstruction or implant-based reconstruction. Implant-based reconstruction uses breast implants to form a new breast mound. The flap reconstruction uses patient tissues from another part of the body.
Why do it?
With breast reconstruction, you can restore your breast’s symmetry after having a mastectomy. Post-mastectomy breast reconstruction improves several aspects of your life. So, why would you opt to go for breast reconstruction? Here are some common reasons.
- To make your clothes fit better
- To regain your breast shape
- Improve the quality of life
- To feel better about your body
- To improve your self-confidence
How is it done?
The breast reconstruction is done in the hospital under anesthesia and you will not feel any pain. If you are having a mastectomy at the same time as the breast reconstruction, the surgeon performs the mastectomy first.
If you’ll have the flap procedure, the surgeon takes a tissue from a part of your body and places it on your breast. The surgeon inserts a tube under the skin to help drain blood during the recovery process. The tube will be removed when you no longer need it.
