Dr. Amir Ghaznavi is a double board-certified plastic surgeon (American Board of Plastic Surgery, American Board of Surgery) who has performed more than 800 liposuction procedures, including lipo 360, at his Northern Virginia practice. He serves on the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) Cosmetic Subcommittee, where he helps shape the national standards for cosmetic plastic surgery procedures. His liposuction training spans a plastic surgery fellowship at Henry Ford Medical Center, a microsurgery fellowship at Cleveland Clinic, and two years as a staff plastic surgeon at AirSculpt in Vienna, Virginia, where he performed high-volume liposuction daily.

Dr. Ghaznavi is trained in every major liposuction technique, tumescent liposuction, power-assisted liposuction (PAL), ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL), VASER, and suction-assisted lipectomy (SAL), and selects the approach based on the patient’s body composition, skin elasticity, and the volume of fat to be removed. He also published peer-reviewed research on post-operative pain management in body contouring surgery (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 2017-2018), giving his patients access to recovery protocols grounded in clinical evidence, not guesswork.

What Is Lipo 360?

Lipo 360, short for 360-degree liposuction, is a body contouring surgery that removes excess fat from the entire midsection in a single surgical procedure. Unlike traditional liposuction, which targets one isolated area, lipo 360 treats the abdomen, flanks (love handles), waist, lower back, and lower bra roll as a connected unit, sculpting the torso from every angle to produce a balanced, natural contour.

The name refers to the circumferential approach: the surgeon works around the full 360 degrees of the torso, removing localized fat deposits and reshaping subcutaneous adipose tissue in each zone so that the transitions between areas are smooth. The result is a proportional silhouette whether viewed from the front, side, or back.

Lipo 360 is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss procedure. It is designed for patients who are at or near their ideal body weight but have stubborn fat that does not respond to proper diet and exercise.

Liposuction is an elective cosmetic procedure and is not covered by health insurance.

How Lipo 360 Works: The Surgical Procedure

Consultation and Planning

Your lipo 360 begins with a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Ghaznavi. He evaluates your body composition, skin elasticity, fat distribution, and areas of the body where fat has accumulated despite maintaining a normal weight. He marks the treatment zones while you are standing so that the natural contours of your torso guide the surgical plan.

Anesthesia

Lipo 360 at AMG Plastic Surgery is performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, depending on the volume of fat being removed and whether additional procedures are being combined. For smaller-volume cases, local anesthesia with tumescent technique is an option.

The Tumescent Technique

Before fat removal begins, Dr. Ghaznavi injects tumescent fluid, a solution containing lidocaine (for local anesthesia) and epinephrine (to constrict blood vessels and reduce blood loss), into the subcutaneous fat layer. The tumescent fluid causes the fatty tissue to swell and become firm, which makes fat cells easier to break up and removes them more precisely while protecting surrounding tissues, nerves, and blood vessels. The tumescent technique is the gold standard for liposuction surgery because it reduces blood loss, minimizes damage to surrounding tissues, and lowers the risk of lidocaine toxicity when administered at proper concentrations.

Fat Removal

Dr. Ghaznavi makes small incisions (typically 3-4 mm) in discreet locations, near the belly button, along the bikini line, and at natural creases, and inserts a hollow tube called a cannula. The cannula is connected to a suction device that draws out loosened fat.

Depending on the case, Dr. Ghaznavi selects from several liposuction techniques:

  • Tumescent liposuction: The most common approach. After the tumescent fluid saturates the fat layer, a standard cannula with suction removes fat through controlled back-and-forth movements.
  • Power-assisted liposuction (PAL): The cannula vibrates rapidly, breaking up fat tissue more efficiently. PAL is especially useful for areas with dense, fibrous fat (the flanks and upper back in men, for example) and for large-volume liposuction cases where surgeon fatigue affects precision.
  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL): Ultrasound energy liquefies fat cells before suctioning, which allows for smoother fat removal in fibrous areas. VASER is a specific UAL system that uses pulsed ultrasound energy to selectively target fat while preserving connective tissue structures.
  • Suction-assisted liposuction (SAL): The traditional method using a cannula attached to negative pressure. Surgeons opt for SAL in straightforward cases where the fat is soft and the volume is moderate.
  • Laser-assisted liposuction: A laser fiber inserted through the cannula delivers energy to rupture fat cells before removal. The thermal effect also stimulates collagen production in the skin, offering a mild skin-tightening benefit.
  • Water-assisted liposuction (WAL) uses a pressurized fan-shaped stream of water to loosen and separate fat cells before suctioning. WAL can be particularly useful for patients requiring lymph-sparing techniques, as the water jet dislodges fat while preserving surrounding lymphatic and connective tissue structures. Dr. Ghaznavi selects from all available liposuction techniques based on the patient’s anatomy and the specific demands of each treatment zone.

Dr. Ghaznavi typically removes between 3 and 4 liters of fat during a lipo 360 procedure. Cases exceeding 5 liters are classified as large-volume liposuction and require additional safety precautions, extended monitoring, and sometimes an overnight stay.

Areas Treated in Lipo 360

Lipo 360 at AMG Plastic Surgery targets the following areas of the body in a single session:

Upper abdomen

Removes subcutaneous fat overlying the abdominal muscles, flattening the stomach and improving definition.

Lower abdomen

Addresses the stubborn fat below the navel that persists despite diet and exercise. This is where most patients carry their most resistant localized fat deposits.

Flanks (love handles)

Contouring the waist from the side. Removing fat from the flanks creates a visible waist-to-hip ratio improvement.

Lower back

Eliminates fat rolls that show through clothing and disrupt the smooth transition from waist to buttocks.

Lower bra roll

Targets the fat pad at the top of the buttocks and lower back, smoothing the profile from behind.

By treating all of these areas in one session, the surgeon ensures that the natural contours of the body flow smoothly from zone to zone. Treating only one area (as with traditional liposuction) often creates visible asymmetry, the treated area looks thinner while adjacent untreated areas remain full.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Lipo 360?

Ideal candidates for lipo 360:

  • Are at or within 20-30 pounds of their ideal body weight
  • Have localized fat deposits in the midsection that have not responded to proper diet and regular exercise
  • Have good skin elasticity (the skin needs to retract and tighten after fat is removed; patients with loose skin or excess skin may need a tummy tuck or body lift instead of, or in addition to, liposuction)
  • Are in good overall health with no uncontrolled medical conditions (patients with coronary artery disease, blood clotting disorders, or uncontrolled diabetes require additional evaluation)
  • Are nonsmokers or willing to stop smoking at least 4 weeks before and after surgery
  • Have realistic expectations, lipo 360 is a fat reduction and body contouring procedure, not a substitute for weight loss

Lipo 360 is not appropriate for patients who are significantly above their normal weight, who have poor skin quality, or who expect the procedure to replace diet and exercise. If you gain weight after lipo 360, the remaining fat cells in treated areas (and untreated areas) will enlarge.

Lipo 360 and Skin Tightening: When to Add J-Plasma (Renuvion)

One of the most common questions patients ask is: what happens to the skin after you remove excess fat?

In patients with good skin elasticity, typically younger patients or those who have not had significant weight fluctuations, the skin retracts naturally over 3 to 6 months.

For patients with mild to moderate loose skin, Dr. Ghaznavi pairs lipo 360 with J-Plasma (Renuvion), a skin tightening device that delivers helium plasma energy beneath the skin’s surface. The thermal effect causes immediate contraction of the collagen matrix, tightening the skin from the inside. Dr. Ghaznavi has performed over 300 J-Plasma procedures and holds a 2022 Renuvion certification. He applies J-Plasma most frequently to the lower abdomen, flanks, arms, and inner thighs.

For patients with significant excess skin, common after massive weight loss from bariatric surgery or GLP-1 medications, liposuction alone is not enough. These patients benefit from excisional procedures such as a tummy tuck, body lift, or arm lift to remove excess skin that no amount of skin tightening will correct.

Combining Lipo 360 with Other Procedures

Lipo 360 is frequently performed as part of a larger body contouring plan. Common combinations include:

Lipo 360 + tummy tuck

For patients with both excess fat and loose abdominal skin. The tummy tuck removes excess skin and tightens the abdominal wall muscles, while lipo 360 contours the flanks and back.

Lipo 360 + mommy makeover

A mommy makeover combines breast surgery (lift, augmentation, or reduction) with abdominal contouring. Adding lipo 360 addresses the flanks and back that a tummy tuck alone does not reach.

Lipo 360 + Brazilian butt lift (BBL)

Fat removed during lipo 360 is purified and transferred to the buttocks for enhanced shape and projection.

Lipo 360 + J-Plasma

As described above, for patients with mild to moderate skin laxity who want tighter skin without the scars of an excisional procedure.

Dr. Ghaznavi evaluates each patient’s goals and anatomy during the consultation to determine which combination of aesthetic plastic surgery procedures will produce the best result with the safest approach.

Recovery After Lipo 360

Week 1

Most patients take 5-7 days off work. Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are expected. Dr. Ghaznavi prescribes pain medication and provides a custom compression garment, which must be worn 24 hours a day for the first 2-3 weeks. The compression garment reduces swelling, supports the treated tissues, and helps the skin conform to the new body contour.

Weeks 2-4

Swelling decreases noticeably. Most patients return to desk work and light daily activities. No exercise or heavy lifting during this period.

Weeks 4-6

Patients gradually resume exercise, starting with walking and progressing to light cardio. The compression garment is transitioned to 12 hours per day.

Months 3-6

Final results become visible as residual swelling resolves. The body continues to tighten and refine over this period.

Dr. Ghaznavi provides referrals for post-operative lymphatic drainage massage, which accelerates the resolution of swelling and improves the final contour. Follow-up appointments are scheduled at 1 week, 3-4 weeks, 8 weeks, 3.5 months, and 6 months post-op.

Risks and Safety

Lipo 360 is one of the most commonly performed aesthetic surgery procedures in the United States. When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon in an accredited facility, serious complications are rare. Risks include:

  • Bruising and swelling (expected, temporary)
  • Numbness or changes in skin sensation (usually resolves within weeks to months)
  • Contour irregularities or asymmetry (minimized by surgeon experience and technique selection)
  • Seroma (fluid collection under the skin)
  • Infection (rare with proper surgical technique and antibiotic protocols)
  • Blood loss and blood vessel injury (minimized by the tumescent technique)
  • Fat embolism (extremely rare; more associated with large-volume liposuction exceeding 5 liters)
  • Organ perforation (extremely rare; damage to underlying abdominal organs from the cannula, minimized by proper surgical technique and anatomical knowledge)
  • Deep vein thrombosis (reduced by early ambulation and compression garments)
  • Lidocaine toxicity (avoided by proper dosing of tumescent fluid)

Dr. Ghaznavi’s published research on post-operative pain management and enhanced recovery directly informs his surgical protocols, reducing complication rates and improving the patient experience.

Published data on liposuction safety indicates that serious complications occur in approximately 1 in 10,000 procedures when performed by board-certified plastic surgeons. A 2015 study found a 1.5% postoperative complication rate, with higher risk associated with larger volumes of fat removal. Dr. Ghaznavi limits single-session fat removal to safe volumes and stages procedures across two sessions when large-volume liposuction is needed.

How Much Fat Can Be Removed?

The amount of fat removed during lipo 360 depends on the patient’s body composition and goals. Typical cases involve 3 to 4 liters. Cases removing more than 5 liters are classified as large-volume liposuction and require hospital-level monitoring.

It is important to understand how much fat can be safely removed in one session. Removing too much fat in a single procedure increases the risk of blood loss, fluid shifts, fat embolism, and prolonged recovery. Dr. Ghaznavi prioritizes patient safety over aggressive fat removal, and in cases requiring large-volume liposuction, he may recommend staging the procedure across two sessions.

Small-volume liposuction (under 1 liter) is appropriate for targeted areas like the chin, inner knees, or small pockets on the flanks. Lipo 360 cases are moderate to large volume by definition because of the number of areas treated.

Lipo 360 vs. Tummy Tuck: Which Is Right for You?

This is one of the most common questions in body contouring surgery.

  • Choose lipo 360 if you have good skin elasticity, no significant excess skin, and your primary concern is removing stubborn fat from your midsection. Lipo 360 does not tighten muscles or remove excess skin.
  • Choose a tummy tuck if you have loose, hanging skin on your abdomen (especially after pregnancy or weight loss), separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti), or both. A tummy tuck removes excess skin, tightens the abdominal wall, and repositions the belly button.
  • Choose both if you have excess skin on the front of your abdomen (tummy tuck territory) and excess fat on your flanks and back (lipo 360 territory). Many patients combine the two for a complete midsection transformation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lipo 360

A typical lipo 360 procedure takes 2 to 3 hours, depending on the number of areas treated and the volume of fat being removed. When combined with other procedures (tummy tuck, J-Plasma, BBL), operative time increases.

The surgical procedure is performed under anesthesia, so patients feel no pain during surgery. Post-operative discomfort is managed with prescribed medication and typically subsides within 5 to 7 days. Dr. Ghaznavi’s enhanced recovery protocols, informed by his published pain management research, are designed to minimize post-operative discomfort.

Incisions for lipo 360 are 3-4 mm and placed in discreet locations (belly button, bikini line, natural creases). Scars fade significantly over 6-12 months and are typically not visible.

In the United States, liposuction costs typically range from $2,000 to $7,000 or more depending on the number of areas treated, the liposuction techniques used, the surgeon’s experience and credentials, the geographic location of the practice, and whether additional procedures are combined in the same session. Lipo 360 tends to fall in the mid-to-upper range because it treats the full circumference of the midsection (abdomen, flanks, lower back, and bra roll) rather than a single isolated area.

Liposuction is considered an elective cosmetic procedure and is not covered by health insurance. Patients pay out-of-pocket for the surgery. Dr. Ghaznavi provides a detailed cost breakdown during your consultation, including surgeon fees, anesthesia, and facility costs. AMG Plastic Surgery does not publish pricing online because the cost depends on the individualized surgical plan.

Liposuction performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon in an accredited facility has a strong safety record. Published data reports that serious life-threatening complications occur in approximately 1 in 10,000 cases. A 2015 study found that 1.5% of patients experienced postoperative complications, with risk increasing in cases involving larger volumes of fat removal.

Serious but rare complications include deep vein thrombosis (blood clots), organ perforation (damage to underlying organs from the cannula), significant bleeding, and infection. Dr. Ghaznavi minimizes these risks through the tumescent technique (which reduces blood loss), appropriate limits on fat removal volume per session, early ambulation after surgery, compression garments, and structured post-operative follow-up.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons published a safety advisory addressing key risk factors in liposuction and recommending protocols to reduce complications. Dr. Ghaznavi’s practice follows these safety guidelines, and his surgical facility will hold AAAASF accreditation (anticipated Q4 2026).

Initial improvement is visible within 2-3 weeks as swelling decreases. Final results appear between 3 and 6 months as the body heals and the skin retracts.

The fat cells removed during undergoing liposuction are permanently gone. If you gain weight after the procedure, remaining fat cells in both treated and untreated areas will enlarge. Maintaining your results requires a stable weight through proper diet and regular exercise.

Traditional liposuction treats a single area (abdomen only, flanks only). Lipo 360 treats the entire midsection, abdomen, flanks, waist, lower back, and bra roll, as one connected unit for a balanced, proportional result.

Lipo 360 produces the best results in patients near their ideal body weight. Patients with a BMI over 35 or those carrying excess weight throughout the body (not limited to the midsection) may benefit from weight loss before pursuing liposuction. Lipo 360 targets localized fat deposits, not overall body fat reduction.

Patients with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) or unrealistic expectations about what liposuction can achieve should receive evaluation and counseling before proceeding with surgery. Lipo 360 produces measurable, visible improvement in body contour, but it does not produce a “perfect” body. Dr. Ghaznavi evaluates every patient’s expectations during the consultation and will recommend against surgery if the expected outcome does not align with what the procedure can deliver. A responsible surgeon will decline to operate when a patient’s goals are not achievable through surgery.

Look for a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), which is considered the gold standard for plastic surgery certification. Verify that the surgical facility is accredited by a national agency such as AAAASF (American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities) or The Joint Commission, or is state-licensed. Ask the surgeon about their specific liposuction technique, annual case volume, and the surgical team involved in the procedure. Surgeons who specialize in body contouring and perform hundreds of liposuction cases per year tend to produce more consistent results. Review validated local patient testimonials and before-and-after photos from the surgeon’s own practice, not stock images.

Dr. Ghaznavi is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (Certificate No. 9150) and the American Board of Surgery (Certificate No. 59770). He has performed more than 800 liposuction procedures. He serves on the ASPS Cosmetic Subcommittee. His facility, Diora Medvance Surgical Center, is pursuing AAAASF accreditation.
