Liposuction

Liposuction

Types Of Fat Body Sculpting

AMG Plastic Surgery in Herndon, VA is pleased to offer two types of liposuction: traditional and high-definition. While each surgically removes stubborn fat, they differ in their methods of fat extraction and overall approach. The type of procedure you choose will depend on your specific needs and treatment goals.

  • Traditional Liposuction

Also called Tumescent liposuction, this is what most people think of when they hear liposuction. In this procedure, the surgeon injects a sterile solution of saline, an anesthetic and a drug that causes the blood vessels to constrict into the area that’s being treated. Once injected, the affected area swells and stiffens. Dr. Ghaznavi then makes an incision in the area where there is too much fat, and then suction devices are used to remove the fatty tissue from that area. The removal process takes about two hours, and it usually requires a week or so in recovery time before going back to work.

  • High Definition Liposuction

High definition liposuction is the newest and most advanced liposuction procedure on the market, designed to sculpt the body for a toned and natural-looking appearance. This procedure is especially effective on areas that have been resistant to diet and exercise: including the upper arms, lower back and abdomen.

  • The AMG 360

The AMG 360, also known as 360 liposuction, is a procedure that removes unwanted fat from several areas in the midsection—the waist, abdomen, mid back, lower back and the “love handles.” This is a great option for patients who want to comprehensively sculpt their midsection for a tightened and toned look.

Why People Choose Body Sculpting

There are many reasons people may choose to have a fat reduction procedure. Some of the most common reasons include:

  • To improve the appearance of a specific area of the body
  • To feel more comfortable in clothing
  • To prepare for a special event
  • To tone those body parts that just won’t tone with diet and exercise

Candidates For Body Sculpting

This procedure is generally most effective for individuals who are close to their ideal body weight and have stubborn fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. It is not a weight loss procedure and is not intended for individuals who are significantly overweight. Have specific areas of excess fat that they would like to address. In general, good candidates for liposuction include people who:

  • Are in good physical health
  • Have realistic expectations about the procedure
  • Have good skin elasticity, as this can help ensure that the skin will tighten and smooth out after the procedure
  • Have specific areas of excess fat that they would like to address

Benefits Of Body Sculpting

There are many benefits to undergoing body sculpting surgery. Patients can experience a dramatic transformation in their appearance, boosting their self-confidence and improving their quality of life. In addition, fat reduction surgery is a relatively safe procedure, and the vast majority of patients are happy with the results.

Some of the most common reasons people may choose to have a fat reduction procedure include:

Preparing For Body Sculpting

Prior to your procedure, Dr. Ghaznavi will discuss all associated risks and considerations. He will also review pre-operative instructions to ensure your procedure goes smoothly. Pre-operative instructions may include:

  • Stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners, that could increase the risk of bleeding during the procedure.
  • Avoid smoking or using tobacco products for at least a few weeks before and after the procedure, as smoking can interfere with healing.
  • Eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of fluids to maintain good nutrition and hydration.
  • Avoid taking over-the-counter pain relievers, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, as they can increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure, as you will not be able to drive yourself.

Preparing For Breast Reduction Surgery

In addition to understanding expectations and asking questions, it is important that patients know how to prepare for surgery. At AMG Plastic Surgery in Herndon, VA, our team will make sure you understand the steps to take prior to your procedure, which may include the following:

  • Stop taking certain medications
  • Stop smoking for a significant length of time
  • Get a baseline mammogram, if necessary
  • Follow all day-of instructions

In addition to these steps, you will also want to arrange someone to drive you to and from your procedure. It is also helpful to have someone stay overnight with you after your procedure to assist you with post-operative care.

What Is Microneedling?

Collagen is a substance your body produces in the skin and other areas to give tissues structure. Your body produces less as you get older, which is why you develop wrinkles and are more vulnerable to injuries. Microneedling uses a series of tiny needles to create micro-injuries to the skin, triggering collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production. The result is a reduction in the appearance of scars, wrinkles and pore size, improved skin texture and radiant skin. Microneedling regularly can preserve your skin’s tone, thickness and tightness.

Conditions Treated With Microneedling

Microneedling is an effective treatment option for several dermatologic concerns. Microneedling is safe and minimally invasive, and can help treat the following conditions:

  • Acne scarring, other scars and scar removal
  • Restoring skin thickness and volume
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Stretch marks
  • Pore size reduction
  • Sagging skin
  • Collagen loss

How Body Sculpting Works

The exact steps of your procedure will depend on the type of liposuction you select. However, most procedures will include the following steps:

  1. Dr. Ghaznavi will make a small incision in the skin and insert the cannula through the incision. The cannula is then moved back and forth to loosen and remove the excess fat. The suction device, which is attached to the cannula, removes the fat through a tube.
  2. Liposuction can be performed using one of several techniques. At AMG Plastic Surgery in Herndon, VA, we offer both traditional and high-definition liposuction. While the goal of traditional liposuction is to reduce the overall volume of fat, the high-definition technique aims to remove particular areas of fat to sculpt and define the muscles.
  3. After the procedure, the incisions are closed with sutures or surgical tape, and a compression garment is typically worn to help reduce swelling and support the treated areas as they heal.

Liposuction can be an effective way to contour the body and improve the appearance of stubborn fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. However, it is important to keep in mind that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure and is not intended for individuals who are significantly overweight. It is also not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle, as maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise is important for maintaining the results of the procedure.

Recovery from Body Sculpting

Recovery from this procedure varies from person to person and depends on several factors, including the extent of the procedure, the technique used and the individual’s overall health. In general, patients can expect some swelling, bruising and soreness in the treated areas for the first few days after the procedure. These symptoms are normal and should gradually improve over time. Pain medication may be prescribed to help manage any discomfort.

Most people are able to return to work and light activities within a few days of the procedure, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for several weeks to allow the body time to heal. The exact length of time will depend on the extent of the procedure and the individual’s recovery.

It is important to follow Dr. Ghaznavi’s post-operative instructions carefully during the recovery period to ensure the best possible outcome from the procedure. This may include wearing a compression garment, avoiding certain activities and taking care to keep the incisions clean and dry.

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks and potential complications associated with liposuction. These may include infection, bleeding, scarring and changes in skin sensation. Dr. Ghaznavi will discuss these risks with you before the procedure and provide instructions on how to minimize them.

Can You Combine Body Sculpting With Other Procedures?

Yes, it is possible to combine liposuction with other cosmetic procedures to achieve more comprehensive results. For example, liposuction can be combined with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) to address excess fat and loose skin in the abdominal area. This can be particularly helpful for individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight or who have stretched or sagging skin as a result of pregnancy.

This procedure can also be combined with other body contouring procedures, such as a Brazilian butt lift or a thigh lift, to enhance the overall appearance of the body.

It is important to discuss your goals and expectations with a qualified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ghaznavi to determine the best approach for your individual needs. He will consider factors such as your overall health, the amount and location of excess fat and the elasticity of your skin when determining the most appropriate combination of procedures.

It is also important to keep in mind that combining multiple procedures may increase the risk of complications and the length of the recovery period. Dr. Ghaznavi will discuss these risks with you and provide instructions on how to minimize them.

Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is used to minimize bags on the lower eyelid and remove excess skin from the upper lid. Sometimes sagging eyelids impact vision. Other times, they can make you look older than you are. Eyelid surgery can create a younger, more refreshed look.

Drooping upper eyelids or puffy lower eyelids can make you look older than you are or cause people to ask if you are tired, upset or sick. Eyelid surgery can return your drooping, puffy eyelids to a more youthful appearance and improve how others see you. Eyelid surgery can be performed in conjunction with other procedures.

Benefits Of Eyelid Surgery

In addition to restoring a more refreshed appearance, eyelid surgery can:

  • Minimize dark circles under the eye
  • Improve vision
  • Minimize under-eye bags
  • Take years off your age

Types of Eyelid Lift Surgery

Eyelid lift surgery may include upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both.

  • Upper Eyelid Surgery
  • Lower Eyelid Surgery

What To Expect

Cosmetic eyelid surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure that lasts from 45 minutes to 2 hours. During the first one or two weeks after eyelid surgery, patients commonly have some visible bruising and swelling, and their eyelids may feel unusually tight. Most patients report feeling soreness relieved using cold compresses and keeping the head elevated.

Keeping Your Results Looking Their Best

Although we can’t stop the aging process, your results will age naturally with you. If you wish to touch up your eye lift at any point and maintain a youthful appearance, we offer Botox, dermal fillers and skin resurfacing.

Facelift In Herndon, Virginia

Age-related changes to the face are normal, such as loose skin, jowls, and deep wrinkles, but rejuvenating your appearance with a cosmetic procedure can boost your confidence. Some issues are easily treated with minimally invasive procedures like fillers and peels, but other things like loose skin and deep wrinkles often require more extensive treatment like a facelift.

While facelifts are more common in women, this does not mean that men cannot also benefit from this procedure! In fact, 1 in 10 patients who undergo a facelift procedure is a man. A facelift eases signs of aging in your face and neck. It tightens sagging skin and smooths deep folds.

Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Augmentation Surgery

Can I wear a bra after surgery?

Your breasts will need support after surgery, especially while you are healing. As tempting as it may be, you should not go braless while you are recovering. Instead, opt for a comfortable and supportive alternative such as a compression bra, a bra that clasps in the front, or a bra with thick, adjustable straps.

Is breast augmentation painful?

You can expect some pain, swelling and bruising in and around the surgery site. These symptoms typically subside in about a week. During recovery, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers. Following Dr. Ghaznavi's instructions will ensure that you heal quickly.

When can I start driving again?

You should be able to drive about one week after your surgery.

Can I combine breast augmentation with another procedure?

Yes, breast augmentation can be combined with other procedures. Most often, breast augmentation is combined with breast lift surgery, but at AMG Plastic Surgery in Herndon, VA it can also be combined with tummy tuck and liposuction procedures.

Should I wait until after Ive had children to get breast augmentation? Can I breastfeed?

No, women can still sustain a healthy pregnancy and successfully breastfeed following implantation. Your implant is located below the breast tissue and will not affect your ability to produce milk. However, women who receive periareolar incisions during breast augmentation are at higher risk of developing breastfeeding complications.

Is breast augmentation a good solution for sagging breasts?

Breast augmentation is not a solution for sagging breasts. Patients with this condition will need a breast lift. The good news is that at AMG Plastic Surgery in Herndon, VA, these can often be done at the same time.

How quickly does a ruptured implant need to be removed?

Though not an immediate, emergency situation, breast implants should be replaced fairly quickly, usually within a few months of rupture. In most cases. Dr. Ghaznavi can perform removal and reimplantation in the same procedure.

Do the CCs in implants correlate to a bra cup size?

CCs do not correlate with bra cup size. Though breast augmentation will increase the volume and fullness of your breasts, no woman's body is the same. Your body will look and respond differently to implants than another woman's body. For that reason, we cannot guarantee that you will be a specific bra cup size after your breast augmentation.

Can I still get a mammogram?

Yes, you will still be able to get a mammogram. In order to get a good look at your breast, your mammogram may be slightly more invasive than before surgery. Talk to your women's health provider about how often you need a mammogramu2014this varies on your age and family history of breast cancer.

How can I prepare for my procedure?

Before your surgery, Dr. Ghaznavi will help you decide on your specific type of implant based on your preferences for appearance, feel, and size. Once you have chosen your implants, Dr. Ghaznavi may order a mammogram, depending on your cancer risk. If you smoke, you will need to stop for a couple of weeks prior to your procedure. Our team at AMG Plastic Surgery in Herndon, VA may also instruct you to stop taking certain medications leading up to your surgery. On the day of your surgery, refrain from eating and drinking, wear comfortable clothing and follow all other instructions. Make sure you have someone to drive you home from the surgery. Check out our patient resources for more information about how you can prepare for your surgery.

How soon can I return to work?

Most people go back to work 1-2 weeks after their procedure. If your job requires you to lift over 5 pounds, you may need to delay your return to work for longer.

Will I lose sensation in my breasts?

Numbness of the breast is normal following your procedure. Temporary loss of sensitivity or sensation in the nipple can also occur and is caused by disruption of the nerve during surgery. Sensation typically returns about six months after your procedure, but some women never regain sensation.

How can I tell if my implant has ruptured?

Signs of implant rupture include changes in breast size and shape, pain and swelling. “Silent rupture” occurs when there are no noticeable signs of rupture and can only be detected by MRI. The FDA recommends that patients receive regular MRIs every three years after implantation surgery and every two years after that. If you think your implant has ruptured, make an appointment with us as soon as possible.

Will I have to have more surgery?

Breast implants are not lifetime devices and will experience wear and tear as they age. They will eventually need to be replaced with breast implant exchange surgery. Luckily, this procedure is typically less invasive and painful than your initial implant surgery. You will also need removal and reimplantation surgery if you experience any complications after your initial procedure, such as rupture or capsular contracture.

Is breast augmentation covered by my insurance?

Since breast augmentation is an elective, cosmetic surgery, it is not covered by most insurance plans. At AMG Plastic Surgery in Herndon, VA, we believe that payment should not be a barrier to feeling your best, and we offer flexible payment plans for our patients.

Who is a Candidate for this Procedure?

This procedure is typically recommended for patients who have drooping or sagging breasts due to factors such as aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight fluctuations. It can be performed on patients of any age, but it is usually recommended for patients who are finished having children.

Is it painful?

During the procedure, patients are given anesthesia to numb the area and reduce discomfort. Some patients may experience discomfort or pain after the surgery, but this can typically be managed with pain medication. If your pain following the procedure is unmanageable or severe, please contact AMG Plastic Surgery as soon as possible.

How long does the procedure take?

The length of the procedure can vary depending on the individual patient and the extent of the surgery. In general, a breast lift takes about two to three hours to complete.

How long is the recovery after the procedure?

The recovery time can vary from person to person, but most patients are able to return to work within a week. However, they should avoid strenuous activities, such as heavy lifting or exercise, for at least four to six weeks. It is important to follow Dr. Ghaznavi’s instructions closely during the recovery period to ensure a successful outcome.

Are there any risks or complications associated with this surgery?

As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks and potential complications. These can include infection, scarring, changes in sensation in the breast or nipple, and difficulty breastfeeding. Dr. Ghaznavi will discuss the potential risks and complications with you before the surgery. By closely following post-operative instructions, you can reduce your risk of developing an infection or other complications.

How long do results last?

The results can last for many years, but the breasts will continue to age and may eventually begin to sag again. The longevity of the results can be affected by factors such as aging, weight fluctuations, and pregnancy. To maintain the results, it is important to maintain a stable weight and avoid activities that can cause the breasts to sag, such as heavy lifting or high-impact exercise. If you have any questions or concerns about the longevity of your breast lift results, be sure to talk to Dr. Ghaznavi.

Will I have any scars?

As a dual board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Ghaznavi has performed countless procedures in which incisions are necessary. While he always tries to make incisions that are small or in an inconspicuous place, some scarring may occur around the incision site. The possibility of scarring is something that you can discuss during your initial consultation, along with other risks and considerations.

What should I avoid after surgery?

It is important to avoid activities that could put excessive pressure on your breasts or cause them to become inflamed. This can include heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and contact sports. You should also avoid sleeping on your stomach and wearing clothes that are too tight or restrictive. It is important to follow Dr. Ghaznavi’s instructions for aftercare to ensure the best possible outcome.

Can this procedure increase the size of my breasts?

While this procedure can improve the shape and position of the breasts, it does not necessarily increase their size. If you want to increase the size of your breasts, you may want to consider a breast augmentation procedure in addition to a breast lift. Breast augmentation involves the placement of breast implants to add volume to the breasts.

Can I still breastfeed after surgery?

In most cases, women are able to breastfeed after this procedure. However, there is a slight risk that the milk ducts or nipples could be damaged during the surgery, which could affect the ability to breastfeed. Before undergoing a breast lift, it is important to discuss your breastfeeding plans with Dr. Ghaznavi to determine the best course of action. In some cases, he may recommend waiting until after you have finished breastfeeding to have the surgery.

Am I a candidate for breast reduction?

Women with large breasts who deal with daily discomfort, pain, unwanted attention, difficulty participating in physical activities or other adverse symptoms may benefit from a breast reduction. In some cases, this surgery may also be recommended for medical reasons. Candidates can be any age but their breasts must have finished developing.

Can men get this surgery?

Yes. Men with gynecomastia, or enlarged breasts, can also benefit from this procedure. Called male breast revision surgery, the surgery removes excess glandular tissue and fat, helping patients achieve a more toned look.

Will breast reduction also lift my breasts?

Since the nipple is repositioned during surgery, all breast reduction procedures include some degree of lifting. This means that some tightening of the breasts can be expected.

Can I have children after this surgery?

We recommend that patients wait to have this surgery until after they are finished having children. Reduction surgery can affect the mammary glands and decrease your milk supply. Another potential problem for breastfeeding moms after surgery is increased or decreased nipple sensitivity, which can make it more difficult to express milk.

What can I expect during the surgery?

During this procedure, patients are first put under general anesthesia. The exact technique used will depend on the specifics of your case, but generally, Dr. Ghaznavi will make an incision around the areola (the dark area surrounding the nipple) and then down the front of the breast. The excess tissue will then be removed and the remaining breast tissue will be reshaped to create a smaller, firmer breast. The incisions will then be closed with stitches and a dressing will be applied.

Is it painful?

The surgery is performed under anesthesia to reduce pain and discomfort. Some pain and discomfort during recovery can be expected but can be managed through pain medication. Ice packs can be used to help with pain and swelling.

How long does the surgery take?

Since no patient is the same, the duration of surgery can differ. It can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours.

How long does it take to recover?

Recovery is different for everyone, and patients should follow their surgeon’s instructions in order to ensure a smooth recovery. Patients will need to wear a surgical bra and refrain from lifting heavy objects and engaging in physical activity for about four to six weeks, or as specified by Dr. Ghaznavi.

Will I have scars?

Dr. Ghavnazi is a highly experienced and skilled surgeon who makes every effort to use a minimal amount of incisions. He also favors small incisions over large ones. However, patients will have some scarring that will fade as time goes on.

Are there any risks?

Breast reduction is considered safe. However, it comes with risks of complications, like any procedure. These complications include infection, temporary bruising and loss of nipple sensation. Dr. Gorantla and the team at AMG Plastic Surgery will review these risks and considerations prior to your procedure.

Does my insurance cover the cost?

If your breast reduction is deemed medically necessary, your insurance will likely cover it. You must experience negative health effects due to your large breasts in order to get your procedure medically covered.

How long do results last?

The results of breast reduction surgery typically last a long time, but it is important to maintain a stable weight and avoid significant fluctuations in weight, as this can affect the size and shape of the breasts. Additionally, the natural aging process and changes in hormones can also affect the size and shape of the breasts over time.

Is liposuction an alternative to breast reduction?

Liposuction is a good alternative for some patients who desire smaller breasts. It is less invasive, requires less recovery time and leaves little-to-no scarring. Breast reduction surgery also lifts the breasts when the nipple is repositioned, while liposuction does not tighten and lift. In certain cases, liposuction is used in conjunction with reduction.

What does this procedure entail?

Also known as an abdominoplasty, this surgical procedure involves removing excess skin and fat from the abdominal area and tightening the muscles in the abdominal wall. It is typically performed to improve the appearance of the midsection and to give the abdomen a smoother, firmer look.

Who is a good candidate?

There are several factors that may make a person a good candidate, including excess skin and fat in the abdominal area, loose or sagging skin, poor muscle tone, pregnancy or significant weight loss and good overall health. It is important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ghaznavi to determine if you are a good candidate for a tummy tuck.

Should I wait until I am done have kids to have a tummy tuck?

For best results, we recommend having this procedure once you are finished having children. Not surprisingly, pregnancy can reverse your results. Patients who chose this procedure should be healthy overall, close to their desired weight and should not intend to become pregnant in the future.

How long does this procedure take?

The length of the procedure varies depending on the extent of the surgery. A full tummy tuck can take as little as 90 minutes to complete. Based on your specific needs and treatment goals, it may take longer.

Are there different types of tummy tucks?

Procedures involving less excess skin and fat are sometimes referred to as mini tummy tucks. A regular or full tummy tuck refers to patients with a larger amount of skin. The techniques used by Dr. Ghaznavi during the surgery depend on the amount of excess skin and fat to be removed. Patients may require different placement of incisions depending on the extent of the surgery.

What is the recovery time?

The recovery time can vary depending on the individual and the extent of the surgery. Most people need to take at least one to two weeks off work to recover. Strenuous activities and exercise should be avoided for at least six weeks after the procedure.

Will I have a drain during recovery?

Patients will need to wear a drain for a couple of days to about a week after the procedure. The drain will be situated around the incisions to remove excess fluid. Our team will show you how to take care of the drain before sending you home after surgery, along with other post-operative instructions.

What should I wear during recovery?

Immediately after the surgery and for about a week afterward, patients will need to wear a drain. After the drain is removed, patients will wear a compression garment for around 6 weeks, or as specified by Dr. Ghaznavi. During recovery, we recommend patients wear loose-fitting or baggy pants to avoid irritation, support healing and feel as comfortable as possible.

Is this procedure safe?

Yes, this is a generally safe procedure, especially when performed by a board-certified surgeon.

Are there any risks or complications?

As with any surgery, there are risks and potential complications associated with this procedure. These may include infection, bleeding, scarring and adverse reactions to anesthesia. It is important to discuss the risks and potential complications of a tummy tuck with your surgeon before the procedure. While Dr. Ghaznavi will try to make scars inconspicuous, they can still occur.

Does insurance cover the procedure?

Most insurance plans will not cover this surgery, since it is considered an elective procedure. However, patients should still check with their insurance company before the procedure. If you need help communicating with your insurance, talk to our team—we are happy to help!

How long do the results last?

The results are typically long-lasting, but it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, to help maintain the results. Weight gain and pregnancy can affect the results of a tummy tuck, so it is important to consider these factors before undergoing the procedure.
