Liposuction, also known as liposculpting or fat reduction, is a cosmetic procedure performed by Dr. Ghaznavi for patients looking to remove stubborn excess fat. This procedure is extremely popular globally—in fact, recently published data from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) reported that this procedure is the most popular form of plastic surgery in the world, just ahead of breast augmentation. With so much information out there about this procedure, it can be difficult to know what is true and what is a myth. In this blog, we are breaking down 5 common liposuction myths so you can make informed decisions about your care. image of liposuction planning

Liposuction MYTH #1: It is a total solution for weight loss.

This surgical procedure is a great way to remove stubborn fat from areas such as the stomach, back, hips, buttocks, thighs, upper arms and more. However, it should not be treated as an end-all-be-all solution for weight loss. This procedure is great for the removal of fat from areas that cannot be removed with diet and exercise alone. However, it does not contribute to a significant overall weight loss. Patients should continue to maintain a healthy diet and a regular exercise schedule for best results.

Liposuction MYTH #2: It is a painful procedure with significant downtime.

Fat reduction surgery is performed under anesthesia, and patients generally experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. The level of pain during recovery can vary depending on the extent of the liposuction and individual pain tolerance, but it is typically manageable with prescribed medications. It takes several weeks to see the full results from the procedure as the swelling subsides. However, patients can typically return to work and light activity just days after the procedure.

Liposuction MYTH #3: There is only one method of liposuction available.

AMG Plastic Surgery in Herndon, VA is proud to offer several types of liposculpting procedures. These include:

  • Traditional: This is the most common liposculpting method. During this procedure, Dr. Ghaznavi makes an incision into the affected area and uses a suction device to remove fatty tissue.
  • High Definition: This is the newest form of liposuction on the market, and is especially effective in areas that are resistant to exercise and diet. While traditional fat reduction aims to remove the total volume of fat, high-definition liposculpting is more focused and aims to create a toned and muscular appearance.
  • The AMG 360: Also known as 360 liposuction, this comprehensive approach removes fat from around the midsection—the abdomen, mid back, lower back, waist and “love handles.”

Liposuction MYTH #4: Only women can benefit from this procedure.

This procedure is suitable for both men and women. Men often undergo liposuction to address areas like the abdomen, flanks (“love handles”) and chest (in cases of gynecomastia or enlarged breasts).

Liposuction MYTH #5: It cannot be combined with other procedures.

This procedure can absolutely be combined with other cosmetic surgeries at AMG Plastic Surgery to achieve more comprehensive results. Patients who opt for liposculpting may also want to combine the procedure with a tummy tuck, to remove excess fat and loose skin in the abdominal area; a Brazilian butt lift, to reshape the buttocks; or a thigh lift, to tone and lift the buttocks and thighs. As with any procedure, it is important to discuss your options with Dr. Ghaznavi and determine which set of procedures is best for your unique needs and goals.
