Improving The Look Of Large Ears

Ear Pinning surgery is a surgical procedure that involves reducing the size of the ear cartilage. This surgery has been around for many years. It was originally used to correct protruding ears, which at one point were seen as unattractive. Today, this type of surgery is often done to reduce large ears. The end result is smaller ears that look more proportionate on your head.

Benefits Of Ear Pinning

  • A more natural appearance to the ears

  • Improved self-confidence

  • A more symmetrical and balanced appearance to the face and head

Ear pinning can be done in children who have excessively large or protruding ears, or in adults with larger than normal-sized ears (also called “lop ear”). The procedure will not change the shape of your face; however, you may notice some changes such as improved hearing and increased self-confidence.

The Ear Pinning Procedure

Ear pinning surgery, or otoplasty, is a surgical procedure to correct protruding ears. It is usually performed on children but can also be done on adults. The surgery involves making a small incision in the back of the ear and then reshaping the cartilage. The cartilage is then placed in the proper position and then sutured into place. Ear pinning surgery lasts approximately 2-3 hours, depending on how much work needs to be done.

The usual result of the surgery is small, symmetrical ears in the proper position. However, sometimes scarring or asymmetry can occur, which would require another procedure to fix it. There is a chance of bleeding and infection, but there are usually no significant complications associated with this surgery.

Recovery From Ear Pinning

After the surgery has been performed, patients are given a head bandage to wear. If external stitches are used, these will need to be removed after about one week. The final results of surgery will not be visible for several months, but at six weeks, there shouldn’t be too much swelling left.

Recovery from the surgery is typically very quick. Most patients can resume normal activities after a few days. Minor swelling and bruising around the ears are common in the first few days after surgery but should fade quickly. It is important to avoid excessive activity, bending over, or contact sports for the first few weeks after surgery to allow the ears to heal properly. Patients can expect to return to work in one week or less.
